Your street can have different weather than the airport

The official Lethbridge weather is measured at the airport, southeast of the city on open prairie. That’s a good spot for an airport, but it isn’t where most of us live.

Across a few kilometres, the weather can be noticeably different:

  • The coulees and the river valley collect cold air on calm nights. They can be several degrees colder than the top of the bank, and they fog up first.
  • Open, exposed areas on the edges of the city feel the full force of the wind, while older neighbourhoods with mature trees are more sheltered.
  • Downtown and big parking lots hold heat, so they stay warmer at night.
  • West Lethbridge, up on the west side of the river, often sees the wind and the start of a chinook a little differently than the east side.

That’s exactly why a local station is useful. West Lethbridge Weather has been recording conditions on the west side since 2007, so you can see what’s happening close to home, not just at the airport.

What to do

  • Compare the city forecast with what a station near you is actually showing.
  • If you live in or near the coulees, expect colder mornings and more frost and fog than the forecast suggests.
  • Keep your own notes. After a winter or two, you’ll know how your spot behaves.
