How badges work
Every badge goes with one of the activity pages here in the Kids’ Science Corner. Do the activity, and you’ve earned the badge. It’s that simple!
- Pick a badge from the list below. Start with whichever one sounds the most fun.
- Follow the link to its activity page and do what the badge asks. Most take an afternoon; a few take a week or a whole season.
- Show a grown-up what you did. They’re your badge checker.
- Print your certificate, write your name on it, and have your grown-up sign it. Cut out your badge from the badge sheet, too.
Collect all eight and you’ll know how to read the weather, tie useful knots, find the North Star and patch up a scraped knee. That’s a pretty great kid to have around on a camping trip!
The eight badges
Weather Detective
To earn it: Play Weather Detective on two different days and answer all six questions each time. Write down one reading that changed between your two days, and tell a grown-up why you think it changed.

Knot Master
To earn it: Learn the seven knots on our knots page. Tie at least five of them on your own, tick them off on the knot checklist, and show a grown-up what each one is for.

Junior Storm Spotter
To earn it: Keep the “my weather week” card on Hands-On Weather Science for a whole week. Learn the four storm signs on the Junior weather spotter card, and tell a grown-up when it’s time to go inside.

Night Sky Spotter
To earn it: With a grown-up, do the backyard night-sky checklist on Seasonal Hunts: find the Big Dipper, hop to the North Star and try to catch the Space Station. Then draw the Moon’s shape on three different nights.
Activity page: Seasonal Hunts
Junior Explorer
To earn it: Visit at least six of the nine places in the Junior Explorer Passport, finish each “find it” challenge, and keep the explorer’s promise.

Kindness Hero
To earn it: Finish one of the four projects on Kids Helping Out: a bird feeder you keep clean all winter, cards for seniors, a safe neighbourhood cleanup or a food bank collection.
Activity page: Kids Helping Out
Radio Explorer
To earn it: Finish the Morse practice card on Radio Adventures, and find out what a radio fox hunt is. Bonus: visit a ham radio club or a Field Day with your grown-up.
Activity page: Radio Adventures
First Aid Ready
To earn it: Build a pocket first aid kit with a grown-up, fill in your emergency card, and practise the steps for a small cut or scrape. Check your kit at the start of every season.

How to print
- Everything at once: use your browser’s Print (on a phone, look under Share). You’ll get one badge sheet and four pages of certificates, two to a page, all in landscape on letter paper.
- Just the badge sheet: tap Badge sheet first, then Print.
- Just one certificate: tap “Print just this certificate” under the badge you earned, then Print.
- Tips: print at “actual size” or 100%, in colour if you can. Thicker paper or card stock makes badges last longer. A grown-up can help with the scissors.
Prefer not to print? You can draw your own badge on paper, using the designs here as ideas.

For grown-ups
These badges work on the honour system, and that’s part of the fun. You’re the badge checker: ask your child to show you or tell you what they did, and sign the certificate together.
- Safety comes with the activities. Each badge links to a page with its own safety notes. Please read them with your child, especially for night-sky watching, storm spotting, cleanups and anything near water or ice.
- Adjust for age. Younger kids can earn a badge with lots of help; older kids can take on the bonus challenges. It’s about learning and trying, not perfection.
- The designs are our own, made for this site. You’re welcome to print them for your family, classroom, club or group.
- The First Aid Ready badge uses a green first aid cross. That’s on purpose: the Canadian Red Cross says the red cross emblem is protected by law in Canada and can’t be used without its written permission.

Badges for indoor days, too: our indoor fun page has knot races and Morse code games that count toward your badges. And check our upcoming kids’ events page.
