Wind Rose: Days, Months and Seasons
Where does Lethbridge wind come from, and how hard does it blow? This page keeps an hourly log of the wind at Gary’s West Lethbridge weather station and draws it as a wind rose for the last day, the last week, this month, each season and all time. The log started in November 2026, so the longer views fill in as the months go by.
The wind roses
Where our wind comes from
Each petal shows how often the wind blew from that direction at Gary’s West Lethbridge station, one reading an hour. Longer petals mean more hours; darker blue means stronger wind.
The history is just starting. This page began keeping an hourly log in November 2026, and so far it has 9 hours of readings. The roses below show what exists and will fill in hour by hour.
- 1–11 km/h
- 12–28 km/h
- 29–38 km/h
- 39–49 km/h
- 50–61 km/h
- 62+ km/h
- Calm (under 2 km/h), shown in the centre
Last 24 hours
Based on 9 hours of readings since November 1, 2026.
That’s less than a day of readings, so this rose can change a lot as more hours are logged.
Most common direction: from the south-southwest (SSW), 22% of hours. Next: SW 11%, WSW 11%. From the southwest round to the northwest (SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW): 33%. Wind of 29 km/h or more (fresh breeze or stronger): 0% of hours. Calm: 44%.

Want the last hour, minute by minute? See the live one-hour wind rose on West Lethbridge Weather. Times are Alberta time. Speeds are the station’s average wind at the moment of each hourly reading, converted from knots (1 knot = 1.852 km/h).
The rose for the last hour, minute by minute, stays on the station’s own site: live one-hour wind rose.
What a wind rose shows
A wind rose is a compass with petals. Each of the 16 petals points to a compass direction, and its length shows how often the wind blew from that direction. Weather services always name wind by where it comes from: Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) defines wind direction as the direction the wind blows from, so a west wind blows from the west toward the east.
The colours inside each petal split it by speed, from light blue for light breezes to near-black for gales. The circle in the middle holds the calm hours, when there was no wind to speak of, because calm air has no direction.
Wind is air on the move. A wind rose is like a tally chart drawn on a compass: every hour, the station puts a mark on the side the wind came from.
Wonder: if most of the petals point west, which side of your house gets the most wind?
Try this: on a breezy day, hold up a ribbon or a strand of wool outside. The loose end points away from where the wind comes from. Check it against a compass app.
How to read it
- Find the longest petal. That’s where the wind came from most often in that period. The text under each rose names it and gives its share of the hours.
- Read the rings. The dashed circles are marked in percent of hours. A petal that reaches the 20% ring means the wind came from that direction one hour in five.
- Look at the colours. A petal with lots of dark blue means that direction brings strong wind. A long but pale petal means frequent, gentle breezes.
- Check the middle. The calm circle shows the share of hours with almost no wind.
- Check how much data is behind it. Each rose says how many hours it’s based on, and since when. A rose built from a few days can look very different next month. Give it a full year before you trust the seasons.
What it means for you: the all-time rose tells you which way to face a tent door, where to put a windbreak or a fence for the garden, and which side of the house drifts fill with snow. The season tabs show how that changes through the year.
Every rose also has a Show the numbers table with the percentage for each direction and speed, for anyone who prefers figures to pictures.
The speed colours
The speed groups follow the Beaufort wind scale that ECCC publishes, converted to km/h. A few neighbouring Beaufort numbers are combined so the rose stays readable.
| Colour band | Beaufort force | What ECCC calls it |
|---|---|---|
| Calm (centre circle) | 0 | Calm: under 1 knot (the rose’s calm is under 1 knot, about 2 km/h) |
| 1–11 km/h | 1 to 2 | Light air, light breeze |
| 12–28 km/h | 3 to 4 | Gentle breeze, moderate breeze |
| 29–38 km/h | 5 | Fresh breeze |
| 39–49 km/h | 6 | Strong breeze |
| 50–61 km/h | 7 | Near gale |
| 62 km/h or more | 8 and up | Gale and stronger |
The station reports wind in knots, and the tool converts at 1 knot = 1.852 km/h. The rose uses the station’s average wind at each reading, not the gusts, so gusty days look calmer here than they feel on a bike. For gusts, check the forecast page or the live readings on westlethbridgeweather.com.
How the log works
Once an hour, this site reads the latest file from Gary’s station and keeps one reading for that hour: the average wind speed, the gust, the direction and the temperature. If the station’s file is more than 45 minutes old, that hour is skipped rather than filled with an old reading, so a power cut or an internet outage leaves a gap instead of a wrong number.
- Last 24 hours and last 7 days roll forward every hour.
- This month starts fresh on the 1st, Alberta time.
- Seasons are whole months, the way ECCC groups them in its seasonal climate summaries: winter is December to February, spring March to May, summer June to August and fall September to November.
- All time covers up to the last three years. Older hours are dropped to keep the log small.
One reading an hour is a sample, not every gust and lull, but over weeks and months it builds a fair picture of our wind. Gary’s station sits on the west side of the coulees, so its wind can differ from the airport’s, south-east of the city.
Because the log only started in November 2026, the spring and summer roses will stay empty until those seasons arrive, and the all-time rose leans toward late fall and winter for now. The page always says how many hours each rose is based on.
